Incredible Hulk Series 1
Marvel’s latest summer blockbuster superhero flick is The Incredible Hulk and, as with any superhero movie, there’s a toy line to tie in with the film. Initially, I had absolutely no interest in any of these figs but after seeing the movie I was suckered into picking up Hulk and Abomination. I guess that’s the way these things are supposed to work… so good job movie-toy marketing tie-in! You win! Expand for pics and thoughts.
The first thing to mention about these figs is the scale - they’re six inch figs, but since Hulk and Abom are supposed to be huge, they’re actually in a 3 3/4″ scale. So, the little normal human guys in the line are just repainted GI Joes. These incarnations of Hulk and his nemesis will not stand up to any six inch scale versions you may have. They’re kinda little!
HULK
There are several versions of the big green guy but I picked up the standard “Hulk with Steel Pipe Weapon” figure because it has the best articulation and no weird action features. The first thing you’ll notice about Hulk is that he’s… crappy looking. Yeah. Hasbro is no good with the paints. But if you assess him deeper than that superficial glance he’s not so bad. His artic is okay and his sculpt is actually not bad. You just can’t tell because it’s hidden behind the lack of paint! I also hate the blue discs in his knee joints, but what can you do? He actually gets thigh cuts and biceps cuts (in addition to the swiveling knee and elbow joints that Hasbro is so fond of) so you can pose him without it looking like his arms and legs are horribly broken. And he has a break apart steel beam weapon that is really pretty much useless.
ABOMINATION
Abom is a mixed bag. He actually looks neat and I’m one of the few fans who likes the movie design of his look. (Although the fish ears would have been cool!) His sculpt is really pretty nice. It’s quite intricate and his toenails are just gnarly looking! He gets some paint shading down on his external skeleton or whatever that’s supposed to be and it looks pretty grizzly like it should, but overall he still could use a lot in the way of paint detail and shading. He’s not articulated as well as the Hulk fig. He has those one-way hips that Hasbro uses with the swivel knees and you really can’t have him do much of anything but stand straight up because of the limitations of his sculpt. His arms are alright though, and he does have bicep cuts, which is a plus. He also gets a useless break-apart pipe accessory. Shrug.
Overall, I actually enjoy having these figs. But I had to accept them with some departure. I never had any inclination to put Hulk and Abomination up on my display shelf. These aren’t superarticulated action figures - they’re poseable toys. Yep. These are the guys you toss down the stairs and drag through the mud in the backyard. They’re great for kids who see the movie and want some little plastic versions of the monsters to crash about.
So, if you’re the type of collector who likes to play with his toys, you may be into these. But if you’re one of those MOC or display only guys, then these are a total pass.

I got these 2 figures waaayyy before the movie came out and I loved them. After seeing the movie I still love them but, The Hulk really looks nothing like his movie counterpart. Abomination on the other hand is almost dead on and he’s pretty big for his scale. I got them mostly because I wanted to do a huge fight scene with my Joes, Indy and Star Wars figures! I do agree with your last comment 100% in that they are meant for kids to throw around and bash together and that’s what I love about them. I know if I were still a kid and this movie came out I’d buy these 2 characters and play with them like I did with the great toys of the 90’s.
i picked up this same hulk figure becausee it looked good. i looked beyond the short scale and small size and horrible paint application. i used thinner to remove the retarded eye paint, and i have to say hulk looks decent. the eyes look good, but the poor paint apps are huge.
never the less, its a good figure. wish the figure was made bigger.
I cared not for any of the movie figures…what a relief for my wallet. I have alot of ML Hulks: first appearance Grey, first appearance green variant, Toybiz’s FaceOff Hulk v. Leader, Toybiz MechaHulk (the best!), Young Avengers Hulkling, Hasbro ML Planet Hulk, Toybiz JoeFixit Hulk, etc., etc. Also have a ML Abomination which I really like. I did pick up the Target Exclusive movie Hulk which is what…a Toybiz ML! Hulk (which I never got) with a new (movie) head. Seeing as the movie is getting good reviews I guess I’ll keep it. The Target Hulk has something the mainline Hasbro Hulks don’t: heft and girth. I like my Hulks, well, big and hulking. That one was featured on the cover of this month’s ToyFare magazine which gives him extra points too.
i tried and i tried but just cudnt find a hulk figure that didnt have a wonky paintjob on his face-after seeing the movie i really wanted to pick up a Hulk and Abomination figure -a huge dissapointment compared to the Iron Man figures-and the stock in my local Asda and Woolworths reflect this
Okay…so i’ve been posting on this site for a while and enjoy hearing everyones thoughts on everything…but what is this problem eveyone has with hasbro’s Pait apps???? I dont really understand that aspect…If it could be explained or something??? I would buy these figures, BTW, but they are too tiny to display with the ML figures i have.
Nice review! The only movie Hulk I’m considering getting is the Target exclusive (depends on if they still have any whenever our Target gets the Animated figures — then I’ll be able to use that coupon!), though I find that “gamma glow” Hulk with the pink shorts to be highly amusing. Who came up with that idea, eh?
Megatherium - when we talk about Hasbro’s “paint apps” what we really mean is their lack of paint at all. 90% of hasbro’s figures are unpainted plastic. they just mold the pieces in the color that they need to be (or don’t, as is the case with things like blue discs in joints…) and they don’t paint over that plastic. It’s mostly noticeable in the very plastic-looking unpainted flesh tones of hands and faces. Having a natural looking coat of flat paint on a figure does wonders to make it look less like a toy and more like a little model.
Wes - I came “this” close to getting that gamma glow hulk just for the kitsch value of it, but in the end i decided i just couldn’t justify dropping 10 bucks on a joke. but when he hits the clearance rack…
Megatherium put your hasbro quicksilver or yellow jacket figure next to a toy biz marvel legend, any one at all,and im sure youll notice a serious difference in quality
Man this stuff is CRAP. Not even worthy of being a doggie chew toy.
